Young Carers on the road to independence

‘We are really excited to be working with Nigel Richards Driving school in an arrangement that supports Young Adult Carers and the driving school. The Young Carers are being taught to drive for free by instructors who are being trained up, under the expert guidance of their driving instructor tutor.

Learning to drive is becoming increasingly prohibitively expensive for young people from lower income families, which many of our Young Carers come from by nature of their caring situations. It is also a skill and tool that is very useful and supportive for families where there is a caring role as it gives the family more control over their complex lives and less barriers to being part of society.’ Sally Duckers, Young Carers Team Leader, Credu

‘This will help me so much. Hopefully I'll be able to help my family out more if I have a car too’ said one Young Adult Carer

‘As a Charity supporting young carers one of our biggest challenges is transport as many of the families we support do not drive or logistically cannot always get their children to our groups and activities. We know that short breaks away from the caring role are important for the mental well-being of caring and being able to drive opens up the possibilities to have connections and breaks, as well as opens up job opportunities.’ Leanne Jeffreys, Wrexham Young Carers Outreach Workers, Credu

‘After more than three decades of teaching thousands of people to drive, some of the most unforgettable pupils I’ve worked with have been young carers. Many have shared with me the immense responsibility they shoulder at home and the sheer amount of time, energy, and love they devote to caring for their parents. Hearing their stories first-hand made it clear just how transformational gaining a driving licence could be for them — not just as a skill, but as a lifeline to independence, opportunity, and freedom. Those conversations have stayed with me and have long inspired a desire to give something back.

For years, the demands of growing the business made it difficult to commit the time and resources needed to support this cause in the way it truly deserved. Now, as our business reaches a new chapter, we’re incredibly proud to be in a position to help. We are delighted to support Wrexham Young Carers by helping their young people learn to drive for free — opening doors to education, employment, and a sense of independence that can meaningfully shape their futures and the future of their parents.

It’s a privilege for us to play a small part in supporting the extraordinary dedication these young carers show every single day.’ Said Nigel Richards
